News: "Sponge cities" to increase resilience in Denmark

How can we protect our cities from the dangers of heavy rainfall and flooding in the future? Denmark is leading the way with the principle of the sponge city !

Danish municipalities have taken innovative measures to protect themselves from flooding. For example, they have converted old lanes into green areas by planting them and have also created retention basins under pavements to effectively retain rainwater. This type of measure could also be a valuable strategy in German risk areas, such as the Ahr Valley, to minimise the risk of flooding and better prepare the infrastructure for extreme weather events. Such adaptation would not only increase the resilience of the affected areas, but would also contribute to the long-term safety and protection of the population living there.
